Have you ever felt like you’re always pouring into everyone else’s cup while quietly watching your own run empty?
Lately, my heart has been a little heavy. I’ve found myself thinking about how much of myself I give to the people around me. I’m always there to listen, to support, to encourage, to understand, and to make sure the people I care about know they’re not alone.
I make room for other people’s feelings, even when I’m dealing with my own. I show up, I check in, I remember the little things, and I try my best to make others feel loved and appreciated.
But sometimes I can’t help wondering… who does that for me?
It’s a strange feeling to be surrounded by people and still feel like you’re missing something. To constantly be someone’s safe place but not always have a safe place of your own. To give so much love and effort, only to sometimes feel like you’re receiving the bare minimum in return.
I’m not saying I do things for people expecting something back every single time. That’s not what love is about. But I do think there’s a difference between expecting something in return and simply wanting to feel considered.
Sometimes I want someone to check on me without me having to say I’m struggling. I want someone to notice when I’m not myself. I want to feel like someone is thinking about me, too. I want to experience the same kind of care that I spend so much time giving to others.
Because the truth is, even the person who seems to have everything together gets tired. Even the person who always says, “I’m here if you need me,” sometimes needs someone to say those same words back.
And maybe that’s something I need to start learning: I can’t keep pouring from an empty cup and convincing myself that it’s okay just because everyone else is happy.
I deserve to benefit from my own kindness, too.
I deserve friendships, relationships, and connections where love doesn’t feel one-sided. Where effort isn’t always coming from the same direction. Where I don’t have to constantly remind people that I have feelings, too.
I’m still going to be the caring person I am. I’m still going to love deeply, show up, and celebrate the people who matter to me. But I also want to learn to show up for myself.
Because being a good person shouldn’t mean constantly neglecting your own happiness. And if there’s one thing I’m reminding myself lately, it’s this:
I can love people without losing myself in the process. I can be there for others without abandoning myself. And I can have a big heart without allowing it to become a place where everyone takes but nobody gives.
Maybe it’s time I start saving a little of that love for me, too.
